How Having 100 Friends on Facebook is like Having 10,000 More Subscribers Who Read Your Emails DailyA Quick Explanation of What Facebook Can Do For Your TrafficFrom the Desk of Tinu Abayomi-PaulTuesday January 06, 2009 3:05:06 am (Pacific) Greetings Future Facebook Marketer, I have a confession to make to you. The page you're reading now almost didn't exist, because I almost kept Facebook my own dirty little traffic secret. If you're anything like me, you didn't get all this hype about Facebook at first, either. It took me a while to figure it out, but when I did, I discovered that:
Well, that depends on how well you learn to understand and use Facebook correctly. What you'll need to learn is how to use this advantage to properly market on Facebook to maximize the possibility that other people will come to your site. You'll have to do this while minimizing the chance that your message will get lost due to improper Facebook marketing. You see, online marketing techniques we all know don't work the same way in Facebook. So, how exactly do you end up getting traffic from this site? To explain how this is possible, I have to go over some numbers with you. Please indulge me for just a moment. On Facebook, I have 290 direct connections, and you'll probably have hundreds more. (Facebook calls them "friends".) Most business people can find 100 connections just from importing contacts from their address book who are already on Facebook. Having 100 friends is a scenario you could easily duplicate when you join Facebook. Now, here is why I’m telling you about my numbers. Pay attention to this and you’ll understand a critical element about Facebook that most people don't. Let’s say that half the people I’m connected to log in daily, as half of Facebook audience is reported to do. Let’s say of those people, I only have strong connections to 100 - of the people who have my news broadcast to them, these are the ones who make a special effort to act on the news they will be updated with when they log into Facebook. These updates happen on their home page. Now, watch this.... If each one of those people * shares my link manually, * has an application installed that does it for them automatically, * comments on my link, or * takes other quick actions on the news I send them, ....hey’ve then also spread my message to the people they are connected with, or who visit their profile. On average if that’s 100 people, then my message was sent, in a personal way, to 10,000 people, probably that same day. That doesn’t count people who happen upon information that connects the two of us on their profile each day. And, here’s the crazy part. If you have a website and can follow some simple instructions, you don’t even have to be logged in to Facebook for this to happen. Chances increase exponentially that more of your Facebook friends will respond if you are, don't get me wrong. It's best to spend at least 15 minutes a day on Facebook if you can. But the point here is, even if you aren't, you can increase your reach by 10,000 people every day if you'd like, without being logged into Facebook to do it, with just 100 connections. You won't need to write an email, buy an ad, or be at Facebook, as long as you know how to set up your Facebook profile. Not bad. To the recipient, it feels like word of mouth marketing, in a personal way. And in this personal way, it's then reached to up to 10,000 people, probably that same day, likely within the hour that I've published. And that doesn’t count any of the other ways to spread messages virally on Facebook. And, here’s the crazy part. If you have a website and can follow some simple instructions, you don’t even have to be logged in to Facebook for this to happen, every day if you like. Chances increase exponentially that more of your Facebook friends will respond if you are, don't get me wrong. It's best to spend at least 15 minutes a day on Facebook if you can, at first. However, even if you aren't, you can increase your reach by 10,000 people every day if you'd like, without being logged into Facebook to do it, with just 100 good connections. You won't need to write an email, buy an ad, or be at Facebook, as long as you know how to set up your Facebook profile. Not bad for a site that's free to join. Of course, it doesn’t happen this way each time But 97 of my 290+ Facebook friends are set up to broadcast my blog posts to their profiles automatically whenever I post. Those 97 people help me spread my message to people they are connected to, and, the people their connections are connected to on Facebook. Most of them get other messages of mine broadcast into the news that publishes to their home pages. And of those friends, most of them have at least 100 connections. I wouldn’t care if they had ten if they were willing to be my part-time evangelists. It's the quality of the connection that counts. This is just one of hundreds of tiny little edges I have over my competition on Facebook, just by having a profile, and setting it up to work for me even when I’m not logged in. And I’m a click away from some of their clients because they don’t see what I do when I look at Facebook for businesses of all sizes. I guess you can see now why I was reluctant to tell my friends about Facebook. As it turns out, I needn't worry. Many people don't understand the power of Facebook for business, and because of this, don't realize how much free traffic they are passing up every day they aren't on it. That's okay with me. People who are dismissing Facebook and other social media tools as time wasters have dismissed their clientele right into my lap, on more than one occasion. Literally. And my business, which was at a dead stop when I was ill for several months, a business I would have lost had this been 2003, is not just saved, but starting to flourish, largely due to the proper use of social media tools and sites. And it is for this reason that the competitor inside me nags “Shut up about Facebook already! You stand to lose the upper hand by sharing this information.” You see, when I told my audience about RSS, all my competitors got feeds. When I told my audience about blogging, most of them started blogging too. So even if I profit in the short term, in the long run, it seems as if I’m leveling the playing field for competitors who don't even exist yet. Mind boggling if you think about it. :- D But in spite of all this, I continue to spread the message, because the side of me that really, really gets what the emergence of social media is about won’t let me remain silent. And that's where you can benefit today. Remember when you first heard about RSS or social media? Do you remember how only the "techies" were using it at first, and for that time period, you could get a huge advantage over your competitors? And how, after that time period, you still had almost a year's head start over most of the people in your industry who didn't "get it"?
