Hey “Palm coast”,
You’re welcome. What’s your real name?
Shams,
You’re welcome. With social sites, the best way to sort through the new social sites is to think about which ones cater to your particular social group. Some bookmarking sites are really for blog readers, and that’s fine. If you are more of a reader than a writer, even if you have your own blog, those will probably be better for you. And better for the community, because all the links you post won’t be your own.

This reminds me of how I managed to get banned by Netscape after two months of blogging: not only that I submitted everything I wrote, but I made 5-6 more accounts and I voted for my stories. Two of them got on the front page, and before I realized what is happening, I got banned forever. I’m still laughing when I remember how naive I was. However, I proved one thing: once the tipping point hit, the traffic grows exponential. When people see 5-6 votes on a story, they would be more likely to vote for it, regardless how stupid it is (and my posts were quite stupid). Had it been OK if I asked 5 friends to vote my stories? Which is the difference?

Well, I wouldn’t tell my friend “please vote on this story” - I’d ask them if they’d please vote if they LIKE a story I showed them, but that’s as far as I’d go. The difference is integrity - letting people know about your story is just good marketing. Asking people to vote whether or not they like the story is going around the purpose of the social networking sites, and if you think about it, defeats your purpose too.
Why would you want more attention for what others are not agreeing is your best work? Traffic doesn’t matter if it’s junk. It can only make you money if it’s good, targeted traffic.
I think it’s a better idea to create community around your content, and in the communities where you hope to get more votes. But even a blog post doesn’t have enough room to really explain this concept and how to go about it in a fair way.

Hello “Tech Thoughts”,
Got a name? It’s easier to bond with humans.
There are actually more sites than these that are comfortable with us submitting our own links - these are just the top five. For example, there’s Search Mob, and ISEDB for the search industry.
Thanks for commenting - please check out our DoFollow policy so we can follow your link in the near future.
