If you remember a few months back, I started making my husband Google sleep on the couch. I was angry at him (in my mind Google is a man - don’t ask. :-D) for the whole Autolink thing, and took all my AdSense ads down in protest.
This morning, I invited him to come in and sleep in our bedroom again.
Why? What is this crazy chick talking about now?
If you have a Personalized Google Home Page (which is free by the way), no matter how little you know about RSS, you can subscribe to feeds very easily - if you can type in a keyword or a site’s home page link you can subscribe to a feed.
This is part of the techie-ing down of RSS that is going to take the hard part out of subscribing to an RSS feed. And as I’ve told you before - when that happens? The pretty-good competitive advantage you have by implementing RSS now is going to increase exponentially.
Back when I made that post, this feature wasn’t even rumored to be available. And when Google made its home page more personal, I was thinking, “so what?”, as I was more impressed that day with Yahoo’s My WEb 2.0.
But I take it all back. If my first love Google will still have me, I’ll have to put Yahoo on the back burner where he belongs.
Why you ask? Why would this possibly be of any imporance to me?
Helloooooo?
BOTH of the two most powerful search engines in the world now have the ability to let the people wh come to your site and don’t understand RSS add you to their homepage. Talk about a traffic boost - if you’re using RSS at your site and your auto-discovery tag is in place, when a person does a search that you’re ranked for when adding a section to their personal page they only get results for sites that have feeds.
So where I rank number four in organic results for free traffic?
If someone creates a custom section on their Google page for free traffic, I’m number two.
And no, it’s not perfect yet (I rank behind a site that isn’t even relevant to that result.) But imagine what that will do for your traffic if you’re using RSS…
I’ll leave you to ponder that. I’ll do an audio or video post about this later today or tomorrow to walk you through the processs, and tell you how I got a clue about this the other day and didn’t even make the connection.
First I want to do some research to see if there’s some kind of “Add to Google” link or button we can display on our sites…
