Some of you lovely folks have been trying to get in touch with me since I left town. Now that I’m back I’m alarmed at how many of these messages are about people who have tried to steal my content, either to promote shady products, scrape clips from my blog or articles to market their own articles, or to fill their blog with content that doesn’t link back to me, or credit me (particularly when their syndication of my content is done in such a way that won’t benefit them - why do it then???)
And I hear you, and thank you.
When you start to become known, folks seem to think they can just rip you off, as they start to see you as an “entity” and not a person. To a point, I’ve accepted that this happens.
But it’s getting out of hand and I’m going to start fighting back a lot harder than I have been. And naming names - right after I shoot off this last series of warnings. It’s just got to stop.
It’s one thing to syndicate a feed clearly marked “Some Rights Reserved”. It’s another to strip the links out (even the ones that have nothing to do with promoting my site - how can someone check out a link that isn’t there?)
Thank you all so much for looking out for me while I was gone. I have several solutions coming up for this issue. Anyone who thought I was going to take their blatant disregard for my intellectual rights lightly is going to get a very unpleasant wake-up call.
We’ll also be having discussions here within the next seven days about what you can do to stop people from ripping off your blog content, taking content off your blog and changing a few word to create an article, and all the other concerns many are having. As the tide of the web turns ever more sharply towards the need for content, there are two issues that need to be dealt with.
1- The growth of those who are too lazy to come up with their own stuff - and never thought of the far-out idea of paying a college kid $20 to create it for them, and,
2- How to protest or protect yourself if you don’t have a pet lawyer foaming at the mouth to earn his retainer.
(Down boy. Seriously, let me try and handle it my way first.)
Stay tuned….
