Updating your audience on how to recover from the Flash Fiaso. If you’re using video to market, they can’t see your videos unless you offer them a fix.

Donna mentioned this yesterday, and I mentioned that Jim Edwards wrote an article telling why this happened, before it happened. From Donna’s comments:

I also have a suggestion for a product. If someone could invent a script that allows the thousands of people whose computers stopped playing flash after they upgraded (should I say attempted to upgrade) to version 8… they would make a mint. Macromedia is aware of the dilemma, is working on it, but thus far, nothing has been resolved. IE and flash.ocx no longer play nicely together.

Now Jim has a video up about it, as well as a blog post. I haven’t had the chance to watch it yet but I think it has the solution in it.

Any other Firefox users out there who weren’t affected by this change?

After much frustration at trying to view flash on so many websites and deciding not to use this on my own site I went down another path and began experimenting with streaming video.
So far the results have been very good.
(I was so impressed I bought the company! No, just became an affiliate).
For anyone that’s interested in going down this track as a viable and effective alternative.

A quick note I forgot to mention.
This service does not require Flash to work but utilizes the active x control in the windows system to work.

    Hi Tinu,

Jim Edwards does have his finger on the pulse online but he would have missed the problem with flash if I hadn’t let him know about it.

His latest video on the subject - why your website didn’t break - is excellent.

Put simply visitors to your site will have to click twice on your video or audio to play it instead of once.

    Not too bad.

    Hope you’re enjoying your family.

    Kindest regards,
    Andrew Cavanagh

    Hi Andrew,

Glad to hear you were the starting point of the good tidings. Not too bad to have to click twice, but the hysteria it caused for such a small thing was remarkable nonetheless. I wasn’t even aware of it at first, and it’s crazy how many people will just assume it’s the fault of the publisher if they have to click something more than once. I didn’t think it was even a big enough of a deal to get published on Lockergnome, but I submitted it and they sure did publish it. Wild weird world.

    Blessings,

    Tinu

OK guys, here’s the quick fix to the multimedia fiasco. 30 seconds and your code will be error free and hopefully before your competition even knows what’s going on :)

Just click on my name above.

I might have to feature that in the next newsletter Tracy. Thanks.
