Search Engine Day :: So How Important Is Linking Anyway?
Hey, You're New Here! We love new people.
Please do us the honor of returning. You can subscribe by RSS feed, or get updates by email. We also welcome your feedback on the posted information. When filling out the form, don't forget to leave your link and your first name.
A post I made about linking awaaaays back in July 2004 referenced an answer to a similiar question in Google Answers. The short answer was that if you’re getting linked a certain way or from a certain type of page, it may be THE most important thing. You could almost screw everything else up, but if you got enough of the right type of links, you might just come out okay in the end.
I’m in partial agreement with that, but only from the perspective that if you are able to get 100,000 links that contain your desired keywords or are from a related page, that aren’t reciprocal, then sugar, you’ve got it made in the shade.
Of course, this type of thing doesn’t really happen in the real world to the entrepreneur or small business site, now does it?
And even if it did, what about the other keywords we pursue?
Further sobering is that the example they use is Monster.com. And while it truly rocks that a site called Monster that’s about jobs can get enough links to come out on top in that search - what about the rest of us wee webmasters in our wee little boots?
(Sorry about that. Just saw my Shrek 2 DVD again.)
So that brings us back to the same question, only paraphrased. In light of the fact that very few of us are starting sites on the scale of Monster.com, as in the given example, how important are links? And where do we get them?
Today in the AllBusiness.com blogs I read a post by Lee Odden that talks about another article which lists the Top Ten Search Engine Ranking Factors.
Now, as Lee says, depending on the way the search professional leans, the order of these top ten things change. But many of these are definitely on the top of the list for many.
Here’s the list - you’ll find some emphasis by me:
1. Title Tag
2. Anchor Text of Links
3. Keyword Use in Document Text
4. Accessibility of Document
5. Links to Document from Site-Internal Pages
6. Primary Subject Matter of Site
7. External Links to Linking Pages
8. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community
9. Global Link Popularity of Site
10. Keyword Spamming (not doing it)
I should also note that this is the modified version of the link after input from various widely-revered search professionals. At a quick glance, three of them are names that I have a great deal of respect for, if that tells you anything… for now I won’t say which names or I’ll be on a whole other tangent. ![]()
Now, given that the list is sorted in order of importance, how many times did you see linking referenced? Five of the top ten factors mentioned linking. So we can safely deduce that while linking isn’t the Only factor, it’s at top consideration.
So that brings us to another group of questions. (Before we get to HOW to get links - be patient!)
In order to know where we should get links from, we need to know if there is any type of link that is more important, are there links that are no-nos, whether some types of links are better than others, and if so, whether we can make up for it in quantity.
Right? Right.
So on we go to the next installment, possibly to occur after some search engine news.
