Search Engine Day :: Traditional Linking Methods

Let’s have a run down of some of the traditional ways of link building and whether they are worthwhile - or even advisable - to use.

Should You Buy Links?

Not necessarily. In a post I made last month I referenced a quote from one of Google’s engineers. In no uncertain terms, the Google representattive states that buying links to increase page rank is “outside our quality guidelines”.

What About Directory Submissions?

There are some great directory sites. Many of them are extremely worthwhile. But even if you find several dozen that are spidered frequently and appropriate to your site, what happens when you exhaust your options?

You’ll find that you need more links.

What About Creating Themed Sites and Linking Them Together?

That used to work. But now if your sites are in the same IP range (quite likely if they’re on the same host or reseller account), it doesn’t make much of a difference.

There are even tools created to help you make sure you aren’t in the same range, which tells you how much of a consideration this often is.

Is Participating In Reciprocal Linking Worthwhile?

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing across the board. But if you’ve ever tried to go through the process, you’ll probably see the issues with this. For those of you who haven’t, let’s go over the process briefly.

Let’s say you sell oranges. You see another site that sells oranges and you think that you’d make good link partners. But the other site doesn’t want to lose business to you, and you don’t want to lose business to them by linking to each other. So what next?

You could link to a site about apples. Apples are fruit too, yet they aren’t direct competitors. So you build a list of 100 sites that are all about apples. You realize that sending 100 mass emails will get no results - most webmasters discard these emails as spam.

So you spend three days visiting each site, so you’ll have something personal to mention in each email you send. You send the emails out, and wait for responses.

And then comes the wait. You’ve invested three days in the visiting and email writing (or a few hours if you decided to risk being seen as a spammer - bad idea by the way). You get 10 responses for the ten emails you sent, at the rate of one or two a day for a week. 7 say yes, you put the links up and feel incredibly unsatisfied with the endeavor, and find another group of fruit sites to start over again.

So that would be the reason that I rarely participate in reciprocal link campaigns. When they work, they can be effective, but there are other, faster ways that make more sense to me.

If you’re going to do reciprocal linking, there are some guidelines on link building at Search Engine Watch. I’ll warn you now, this post is from July 2002. But as it was quite forward thinking for its time, it still has a lot of great guidelines.

If you peeked at that page and started skimming it, you’ll see that it’s quite a bit of work. So is there an equally effective way that you can use?

There are a bunch of them. Carry on my webward friend.
